She liked to work in France or Italy, seeking out shooting locations that were full of history, often abandoned or dilapidated like the New York bathhouse of her first great series. These run-down places allowed her to engage in the striking staging that quickly became her trademark. Her way of photographing her models, captured at intimate moments of rest, sheltered from the bustle of the world, also became part of her signature style.
