« An expansion of the painting-act to the total act becomes possible, one that can be experienced by all the senses » (Rudolf Schwarzkogler, 1965)
Early 1960’s in Vienna : The canvases of several gestural painters widen until they go so far as to invade space, integrating to the composition the painters themselves. These artists will make a laboratory out of this immersion into pictorial matter, in order to search for the representation of the body using photography. In less than ten years, a body of images that relentlessly questions the boundary between object and subject is produced, thus causing censorship and police repression in Austria.
