“I want my work to break the rules of photography, dissecting them, exploding them, welding them and burning them.” Letha Wilson

Galerie Christophe Gaillard is delighted to present Entropic Grace, the first solo exhibition by Letha Wilson (USA, b. 1976) in Belgium. Renowned for her experimental approach to photography, the American artist frees herself from the classic techniques of this medium through physical interventions such as cutting, tearing and deforming, combined with the use of industrial materials such as concrete and steel. These processes enable a fusion between sculpture and photography, giving rise to unique, hybrid works in which images are perforated, distorted and covered. These manipulations reflect Wilson's fascination with nature and landscapes, while offering an innovative re-reading of the medium, and constitute a critical reflection on the fragile balance between the natural environment and human intervention.Born in Hawaii and raised in Colorado, Letha Wilson was profoundly influenced by the vast landscapes of the American West. Her childhood, punctuated by outdoor expeditions, had a lasting influence on her artistic approach. During a residency in Skowhegan, Maine, in 2009, she discovered a new passion for the details and textures of nature, which marked a turning point in her work. Her work enjoys international recognition and has been exhibited in prestigious institutions such as Mass MoCA (US), the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum (US) and the Bronx Museum of the Arts (US). Wilson has also received numerous awards, including the prestigious New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Photography in 2014 and 2019.Entropic Grace invites the public to plunge into Letha Wilson's singular universe, where photography becomes a medium for physical interventions and a means of exploring the boundaries between image and reality. The exhibition highlights the artist's ability to constantly reinvent and challenge the conventions of the photographic medium.
