Surfaces aren’t simply superficial planes in the work of Rachel de Joode (*1979, lives and works in Berlin). Instead, they form the basis of an in-depth investigation into the relationship between objects and their representations. At a time when art is increasingly consumed in a two-dimensional, digital form, Joode questions the nature of photography by exhibiting her images as sculptures. Photographing materials at a remarkably high resolution, her work appeals to the haptic while at the same time eliciting a sense of repulsion.
