Rachel de Joode works in the field of sculpture and photography. Her work ranges from two-dimensional photography over three-dimensional photo sculptures to bronze works and ceramic sculptures. Surfaces are the basis of an investigation of the relationship between the three dimensional object and its two dimensional (re-) presentation forms. Her works exist between the physical and the virtual world: at a time when art is increasingly consumed in the digital dimension, she play’s with photography by transforming two- dimensional images into three-dimensional sculptures. These photographic sculptures are based on handmade, ephemeral, factual and fictional materials and are at the same time strongly influenced by a screen-based context ie. the conditions of our contemporary viewership and our obsession with the screen.
Rachel de Joode (Amersfoort 1979) studied Time Based Arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. She moved to Berlin in 2006 – lived in different cities: Paris, New York, Mexico City. She has been internationally exhibited in group and solo shows in many notable museums, private collections and fairs, including the ICA in Philadelphia; the Henie Onstad Kunstsenter in Oslo; FIAC, Art Basel, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome; ZKM in Karlsruhe; the Gerðarsafn Kópavogur Art Museum Art Museum in Kópavogur, Iceland; Garage Rotterdam; Kunstverein Nürnberg; Galerie Christophe Gaillard, Paris; Interstate Projects, New York; Higher Pictures, New York; and Elaine Levy Project, Brussels.
