Art en lieux is a program developed since 2004 with the municipality of Royère-de-Vassivière. It places the encounter between local residents and the collections of the Frac-Artothèque Nouvelle-Aquitaine at the heart of the project.
This year, the Frac-Artothèque has selected artworks closely connected to the people who are opening their doors to today’s art. The pharmacist, the hairdresser, the butcher, the mechanic, the doctor, the town hall staff, the journalists from Radio Vassivière, etc., all are hosting works of art to share them with both the local population and passing tourists. While building on the concept of lending artworks, which defines the Artothèque, Art en lieux expands this idea and contributes to the development and recognition of learning and art appreciation practices among amateur contemporary art lovers on a village scale. Acting as true relay-mediators, it is through this relationship—both intimate and open to all—that the hosts share their interest not only with visitors, but also with their clients, patients, and listeners... The Art en lieux project affirms the ambition of bringing art as close as possible to each and every one of us.

Remaking the World
History, as they say, is a sequence of events. But what about the possibilities that were dismissed, the invisible forks in the road, the options that led nowhere? Behind official dates and sanctioned images, the past is filled with cracks and crossroads. Sometimes, just a new perspective, a reread archive, or a spotlight on a forgotten detail is enough to make reality tremble.
The artists gathered in Royère-de-Vassivière explore these uncertain zones where history could have taken another path. They do not invent fictions so much as reveal turning points.
By giving substance to what was silenced or left aside, they remind us that the past is never fixed, but rather a field of tensions and choices.
The featured artists remake the world without frivolity or melancholy. Alix Delmas, Jean-François Bory, or Laurie-Anne Estaque unravel what seems obvious. Daniel Silvo or Anne-Marie Filaire confront established narratives. Henri Cueco or Tetsumi Kudo imagine what might have been. Because what seems permanent and irreversible can always be questioned again.
In a world where stories multiply as much as falsifications, these works do not call on us to reject everything, but to think more freely. They reaffirm that History - and personal histories - are never closed, but always open to interpretation, surprise, and reconsideration. After all, revisiting the past is not unusual. Every memory told is already a reimagined version. Memory does not repeat: it reformulates.
