From the late 1950s onward, Georges Noël developed the Palimpsests series, a title he continued to assign to certain paintings well into the 1990s.

The term palimpsest (from the Ancient Greek meaning "scraped again") refers to a manuscript written on parchment that had previously been used, with the original writing erased to make way for a new text. During the Middle Ages, when parchment was scarce, scribes frequently reused older manuscripts by first removing the existing text with pumice stone before copying new writings onto the surface.

"What this history first suggests is that painting may be nothing more than the suspended moment between successive coverings and erasures within the same work—a momentary state of order within an ongoing process of construction and deconstruction."
— Emmanuel Guigon

This canvas is emblematic of Georges Noël's research in the early 1960s, when he developed his own pictorial material: a mixture of polyvinyl acetate—a particularly durable adhesive once dry—combined with sand or crushed flint and pure pigments. He worked this distinctive medium through successive layers of colour, creating raw, granular or velvety textures that engage both the eye and the tactile imagination. Here, the artist assembles and collages paper onto the canvas, creating geometric structures that seek to organize and give order to his "pictorial magma."

These assemblages reveal the work's underlying strata and bear witness to the artist's fascination with prehistoric, archaic, and tribal cultures.
