After living and working in New York for about fifteen years, where he was represented by the Pace Gallery and the Arnold Herstand Gallery, Georges Noël returned to Paris in 1983. He prepared a major exhibition at the Abbey of Senanque, for which he created numerous relief paintings and painted sculptures made from recycled materials, and then, in 1985, a retrospective at the National Center for Visual Arts in Paris.

Georges Noël achieved a synthesis between the gestural style of his early work and the assertive expression of the geometric structure in his relief compositions. His work became more structured and architectural, influenced by American movements such as Hard Edge, Conceptual Art, and Minimalism.

The title of the painting, “Nordic Spring,” evokes the many trips he took in the 1980s and underscores how his work is inspired first and foremost by the elemental nature and light that surround him.

"In 1982, I returned to a way of working with informal elements while drawing on the lessons of my previous experiences, particularly those in the United States (...). The concept of superstructure is related to light and shadow, and the sun. For me, color is what happens from daybreak until nightfall, as shadows move across objects and things. I’ve always wanted to create this sensation of the movement of light and shadow, and now, with reliefs, I’m right in the thick of it. Some parts emerge, while others are swallowed up by the marks. There’s a development that takes place from the background to the foreground, and vice versa."
