From 1961 onwards, Tal Coat settled at La Chartreuse de Dormont, in the Eure region. His studio was immense, with a large glass window opening onto the fields and the world outside. The scale of his paintings increased, and his work underwent a new evolution. It was described as abstract, although it remained inspired by “things seen”: earth, ploughed fields, rocks, flint, flights of birds, or, as here, fields of rapeseed.
“How can you expect me to speak to you about my relationship with nature, when I am within it!” exclaimed Pierre Tal Coat.
Through his art, Tal Coat sought to convey the profound harmony between being and nature. The painter endeavoured to capture the ever-changing movements of light, space and air that surrounded him, and to express their sensitivity.
