----

This work combines two mediums: painting and photography. The geometric, grid-like structure in black paint contrasts with the depiction of the photographed body. It symbolises the effort to give form – that is, to formulate and conceptualise, through art, a new approach to the body.

The image pasted onto the canvas is taken from the photographic action ‘Rituel du sang’, created in 1976. It shows a stigmata: a fragment of a wounded, bandaged and bloodied torso. In an explicit Christian reference, much like Jesus revealing the wounds of his crucifixion, the artist exposes his body. He makes his presence felt and questions his identity. The connection to the sacred is reinforced by the technique of transferring the photograph onto the canvas, reminiscent of the Holy Shroud.

This painting was exhibited by Michel Journiac at the Villa Arson in 1984, alongside three other similar works forming a quadriptych entitled “4 alphabetic traces of the body’s journey”.
