The Christophe Gaillard Gallery is delighted to announce, in collaboration with the Muus Collection, the representation of American photographer Deborah Turbeville (1932-2013) and her first solo exhibition at the gallery. Timeless, evocative, and captivating, her works reflect those of a trailblazer whose work transformed 1970s fashion photography, a predominantly male field. In collaborations with Harper’s Bazaar, Nova, The New York Times, and for designers like Guy Laroche, Valentino, Charles Jourdan, and Comme des Garçons, she set herself apart from her male contemporaries such as Guy Bourdin, Richard Avedon, Erwin Blumenfeld, and David Bailey. From her choice of model poses, settings, framing, lighting, to the very treatment she “imposes” on her prints with their unusual grain (they may be torn, taped, pinned, or smudged), Deborah Turbeville's work is unmistakable, inviting viewers into a deliciously nostalgic world that intrigues and unsettles.
