Ceija Stojka

The Green, Green Grass Beneath

In honour of Romani Genocide Remembrance Day, join us for a virtual screening of The Green, Green Grass Beneath, a documentary film about Romani survivor and renowned artist, activist, and writer Ceija Stojka.

Much of Ceija’s art dealt with her personal experiences as a child surviving Auschwitz, Ravensbrück, and Bergen-Belsen, where she and her mother were liberated by Allied troops. In Karin Berger´s testimony-based film, Ceija speaks about the horrors of her experiences with uncompromising directness and a powerful presence. Her testimony details the strategies she was forced to develop to avoid being murdered or starving, her experiences at liberation, and the difficulty returning to her daily life after Bergen-Belsen.

This year’s focus on Ceija Stojka is also in honour of the Montreal Holocaust Museum’s recent acquisition of one of her artworks that will be featured in the permanent exhibition of our new Museum.

This event is being run in partnership with Romanipe, the World Roma Federation, the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, and the Ceija Stojka International Foundation.
